DD-WRT … Wireless Firmware upgrade (open source)
I love my wireless. Although it does not really meet my needs in terms of bandwidth internall, for internet browsing it is pretty good. As one begin looking for a wireless router one soon finds out that to obtain more features, you have to spend allot of money in the newest technology. Cisco is cornering the market and if they do not have a monopoly on wireless equipment then who does? Anyway….while trying to get my older router WRT54gS (lynksys) to work as a secondary router on my network i stubled upon a little known site aptly named dd-wrt. If you go to DD-WRT you will quickly find out that this site allows you to firmware upgrade one of your older or newer routers and make it instantly more robust. In what way? It allows you to tweak the wirless antenna, have a more robust security, easy to use interface. Wow….this site is increedible. The cost of this…zero. It is open source and they have a great community and forums to help you if you run into problems. I have helped countless individuals with setting up this wireless router. So if you have an old wrt54gs and you are ready to throw it into the trash, think twice about it. These routers, while older technology, can be given new life with a simple firmware upgrade. I belei e it is worth looking into a firmware upgrade before invsting in another newer wireless router.
www.dd-wrt.com Head on over to this site an poke around a bit , I guarantee you will not be disapointed.
